Hardik Pandya: Hardik was unfit three months ago, now became the captain of India, will Rohit Sharma take over the command?
Raj Captain has been made. Hardik Pandya will be India’s ninth captain in T20Is. Before him Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant have captained. Hardik was being criticized 145 days ago. He was not a member of Team India. Now he has been made the captain.
Hardik’s story is interesting. The player, who made his international debut in January 2016, was always said to not take the game seriously and indulge in fun. He was compared to West Indies players. The cricketers there are famous for partying. Critics have never liked Hardik. Hardik was always criticized by the fans of ‘Gentleman Cricket’.
The bad phase started in 2018
Hardik initially performed brilliantly and established himself as an all-rounder. The bad phase for them started with Asia Cup 2018. There was a back injury against Pakistan. He recovered from it and played a few matches. Then ‘Koffee with Karan’ got embroiled in controversy. BCCI took action and later Team India returned. Hardik got injured again after making a comeback.
Team India has been criticized for its selection in the T20 World Cup last year Hardik’s performance was also similar. Could not do much with the bat and could not contribute to the bowling. Team India was out of the World Cup after the crushing defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand. Hardik was the target of critics and fitness was not supporting him, so he was dropped from the team.
Hardik Pandya not participate in domestic cricket
Hardik was concentrating on fitness after the T20 World Cup. During this time he did not participate in Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Right information about fitness has never been revealed. Meanwhile, two new teams were announced in the IPL. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants entered the IPL. Both teams needed a new captain. He was asked to pick three players through the draft.
Hardik Pandya became the captain of Gujarat on January 21.
Hardik’s luck was not with him. The Mumbai Indians with whom Hardik became the champion four times and gave his best performance, did not retain him. The new teams had a chance to pick Hardik. No one thought that Hardik was eligible to become the captain, but Gujarat Titans made him the captain on 21st January. Ashish Nehra was the head coach of the team.
On March 15, a decree was issued by the BCCI,
after which the players were auctioned and cricket pundits described Gujarat as the weakest. Meanwhile, after the auction on March 15, a news came that Hardik could not play in the IPL if he did not pass the fitness test. Actually, Hardik has an annual contract with BCCI. He gave fitness test before IPL and passed it.
and became champions for the first time on 29 May. Hardik looked calm on the field as a captain. He used to take the right decisions at the right time and luck was also with him. Hardik started being compared with Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Then he returned to Team India and after playing three matches, he was made the captain for the next series on 15 June.
Dinesh Karthik and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have more experience in the team selected against Ireland. Karthik has captained in IPL. Bhuvneshwar also has experience, but BCCI is thinking about the future. Hardik also proved himself by winning the trophy in the very first season for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. For these reasons, the board made him the captain.
The journey is still long for Hardik. Rohit Sharma will be the regular captain of Team India at least for the next two years. Hardik is up against many great players to replace him. Among them are Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer and Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul. Rahul and Pant have captained Team India and the board members still like both of them. In such a situation, the road is not easy for Hardik. He has to show his captaincy pattern against Ireland. After that their way can be made. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has recently said that Team India can play two series simultaneously in future. On one side the Test team will be in the field and on the other hand limited over matches will be played. In such a situation, Hardik can be made captain in limited overs.
